We are partnering with the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce, ArtsNL, and the Inuit Art Foundation to host an Information Session and Meet & Greet. Each organization will give an introduction of what they do, and what programs and opportunities they offer artists. There will be plenty of time for questions, chats, and refreshments!
Commission of Artwork: The Mary MacDonald Award The 2024 Excellence in Visual Arts (EVA) Awards

Description:
VANL-CARFAC is looking to engage an artist to produce an original work to be presented as the prize for the Mary MacDonald Award. This award is one of five awards to be presented annually as part of the EVA Awards (Excellence in Visual Art Awards). Offset reproductions will not be considered.
Eligibility:
Artists submitting proposals must be up-to-date members of VANL-CARFAC. Individuals may become members at the time of submission. You can purchase your membership HERE. Please, contact the VANL-CARFAC office should you need assistance.
Evaluation:
1. The artwork must take into account the purpose behind the award, which is meant to honour an individual, group or organization whose efforts have helped to sustain and build the visual arts sector.
2. The artworks must be small in scale. As a rough guideline for applicants, we suggest that you keep proposed works within range of the following measurements:
two-dimensional and framed works, approx. 11” x 17”
three-dimensional works, approx. 1 ft. sq.
3. The visual artists currently sitting on the VANL-CARFAC EVA Committee will serve as the selection committee to evaluate all proposals and select the artist for this commission.
Submissions:
Submissions can be made electronically via email to vanlcarfac@gmail.com (with ‘Mary MacDonald Artwork submission’ in the subject line) or mailed or delivered by hand to VANL-CARFAC, 155 Water St., St. John’s NL, A1C 1B3. All submissions must include the following materials:
a short written project description, no more than one (1) page in length, stating visual art medium, materials, approximate size and concept of the proposed final artwork
a sketch or some form of visual representation of the concept
the artist’s CV
up to 10 images of past work, saved as JPEGs , to be sent via email (only images of past works will be accepted, actual artworks will not be considered). This should be accompanied by a numbered image list with image title, size and medium, and the JPEG titles should include the artist name and image number (e. Smith_01)

Fee:
Artist fee of $1000 (firm) to be paid for the completed artwork, payable once the artwork has been delivered. Any shipping costs are the responsibility of the artist.
Please note that VANL-CARFAC retains the right to photograph the artworks in the context of the EVA Awards Ceremony, for the purposes of display on our website, newsletter and other organization materials, including newspaper advertisements congratulating the winner of the award. The artist will be credited in all instances where the image may appear. We will not sell or licence images of the artworks for use by any other organization.

Recipient of the 2024 Pivotal Point Grant Announced – Visual Artist, Megan Samms, Awarded $5,000
For Immediate Release: March 15th, 2024 Visual Artists Newfoundland and Labrador (VANL-CARFAC) is pleased to announce Megan Samms as the recipient of the 2024 Pivotal Point Grant in support of their upcoming exhibition “this is how we can visit.”
Megan Samms (she/they) is an L’nu and Nlaka’pamux interdisciplinary artist who works in a range of media including textile, natural dyes and inks, paint, text, and photography and has shared work in exhibitions, residencies, numerous publications. Megan is also a regenerative, community-based farmer who lives and works in the Codroy Valley. Samms was awarded this year’s Pivotal Point grant in support of their project this is how we can visit—a body of work composed of handwoven textiles and photographs. These works will be exhibited near their home in Codroy Valley, in a wool mill where their great grandmother worked as a weaver and fibre producer. The project will be documented by Kristin Pope, a photographer and frequent collaborator of Samms.
“Over the course of my career, I’ve had to leave my community to formally engage in artistic activities,” Samms says. “Hosting an exhibition [in the Codroy Valley] opens up space for more artistic dissemination, provides an example of what practice can look like, and shows leadership in rural art working. And put most simply, I wish to share my work with my people in my place.”
“We are very pleased to select Megan Samms as the recipient of this year’s Pivotal Point Grant,” said the 2024 jury. “Rooted deeply in place and materiality, Megan’s weaving and textile work is thoughtful, evocative, and challenging. Megan’s dedication to community and intergenerational collaboration is undeniable and we’re confident that their project will continue a practice of building bridges between people and places, past and present. Megan’s work makes a real impact, and we’re thrilled to provide support for this important project.”
The Pivotal Point Grant is a funding opportunity offered through VANL-CARFAC for visual artists in Newfoundland and Labrador. It was created to provide financial support for working visual artists who have reached a crucial point in their artistic career, to allow them to evolve their practice and develop their reputation and visibility within the art world. The jury for this year’s Pivotal Point was Robert Hengeveld (Corner Brook), Matthew Hollett (St. John’s) and Sue Balint (Toronto).
