Position: Administrative Coordinator 

Salary: $35,000 + contribution to a basic health and dental plan.

This position is 35 hours a week for 50 weeks. In-person position located in downtown St. John’s.

Job Description

VANL-CARFAC is the primary umbrella advocacy organization for the visual arts sector in Newfoundland and Labrador and as a member’s-based group, VANL-CARFAC’s official motto is “artists working for artists.”    

The Administrative Coordinator will be tasked with maintaining the VANL-CARFAC office and will serve as the primary contact for members and for non-member artists and organizations.  In this capacity the coordinator will be required to address individual concerns of artist members, locate and dispense the information and resources they may need and/or filter appropriate calls/emails to the Executive Director, the board or committee chairs. 

 In addition, the Administrative Coordinator is responsible for (but not limited to) the following duties: 

  • Producing the weekly E-Bulletin highlighting exhibitions, gathering news from the visual arts sector, residencies and job opportunities, and sending it to the VANL membership. 
  • Bi-weekly bookkeeping, processing memberships and keeping the artist member databases current. 
  • Email membership/information packages to new members. 
  • Coordinate with the Executive Director and Board of Directors on all events and programming for the organization as they occur over the course of the year: including the Excellence in Visual Arts Awards, annual general meeting, board meetings, Professional Development workshops, Artist Talks, etc. and work with necessary committees to actualize all details of these programs.
  • Maintain updated media, gallery and patron contact lists as well as artist’s websites. 
  • Managing mail orders and memberships
  • Maintaining the VANL office
  • Managing VANL’s website and social media and overseeing member communications.

Skills

  • Ability to self-direct and set ongoing goals and objectives, as well as ability to work with board of directors, committees and staff 
  • Good communication skills
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MailChimp, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, WordPress will be considered an asset
  • Completion of a visual arts related degree from a post secondary institution, or the equivalent in professional experience in visual arts or a related field is not required but would be considered an asset.
  • Some experience or specific interest in arts advocacy/policy. 
  • Organized, deadline oriented and a self starter. 

Qualifications

This position is funded through the JobsNL Wage Subsidy program, and must adhere to the following:

  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Newfoundland and Labrador and reside in the province.
  • Applicants must be unemployed or underemployed (underemployed being someone who has been employed on average less than 20 hours per week or in a field not related to their training) – verification of hours required.

Congratulations to the Winners of the 18th Annual Excellence in Visual Arts Awards!

ST. JOHN’S NL:  (June 8th 2024) The eighteenth annual Excellence in Visual Arts Awards took place on June 7th at The Rooms in St. John’s. The EVA Awards celebrate the achievements of visual artists and recognize the significant contribution the visual arts make to the vibrant and dynamic culture of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Emerging Artist Award (sponsored by Lat49 Architecture) honors the promising start made by an emerging visual artist in the early stages of their career.  The Emerging Artist Award 2024 went to artist collective HOT 4 THE MOMENT, created by artists Georgia Dawkin and Drew Pardy.

The Mary MacDonald Award (sponsored by Perfect Day Design & Advertising) is named to honour NL’s beloved arts administrator, curator and writer Mary MacDonald, who passed away in 2017.  This award, thanks an individual or organization whose efforts have helped to sustain and build the visual arts sector.  The winner of this year’s Mary MacDonald Award is Bethany MacKenzie.  

The Critical Eye Award (sponsored by Christina Parker Gallery) celebrates the best piece of critical writing about Newfoundland art in any print or online publication worldwide. This year’s winner of the Critical Eye was Emily Critch, for her piece “L’NU/Beautiful: Jerry Evans’ Retrospective Weljesi.”   

The Tara Bryan Endurance Award (sponsored by the Tara Bryan Legacy Fund) recognizes the consistent dedication and commitment of an artist to their professional practice, and to sustained creative output and performance.  This year’s winner of the Endurance Award was artist Kathleen Knowling.

The Excellence in Fine Craft Award (sponsored by the College of the North Atlantic and the Craft Council of Newfoundland & Labrador) acknowledges individuals and groups who have made a significant contribution to the province’s craft culture in the past calendar year.  The inaugural winner of the Fine Craft Award was Ashley Hemmings

The Milestone Award celebrates a visual artist who has, in the last calendar year, achieved a significant milestone in their career, through exhibition or presentation, a breakthrough in their practice, or new and innovative exploration. This year’s Milestone Award went to April Allen.

Shortlists Announced for the 2024 Excellence in Visual Arts Awards

The eighteenth annual Excellence in Visual Arts Awards will take place on June 7th at The Rooms, St. John’s, Newfoundland. The EVA Awards are the only awards program solely dedicated to celebrating the visual culture of Newfoundland and Labrador.

This year’s EVA Awards jury reviewed submissions from across the province, representing a wide spectrum of artistic mediums and styles. Below are the shortlists for four of the six awards – the winners of the Tara Bryan Endurance Award (Prize $2000 – Sponsored by the Tara Bryan Legacy Fund and presented in partnership with CARFAC National) and Mary MacDonald Award (Prize: $1000 and an artwork by Erin St. John — Sponsored by Perfect Day) will be announced at the EVA ceremony.
