Description:       

VANL-CARFAC is looking to engage an artist to produce an original work to be presented as the prize for the Mary MacDonald Award.  This award is one of five awards to be presented annually as part of the EVA Awards (Excellence in Visual Arts Awards). Offset reproductions will not be considered.

Eligibility:           

Artists submitting proposals must be up-to-date members of VANL-CARFAC. Individuals may become members at the time of submission. Please, contact the VANL-CARFAC office for details.

Evaluation:         

1. The artwork must take into account the purpose behind the award, which is meant to honour an individual, group or organization whose efforts have helped to sustain and build the visual arts sector

2. The artworks must be small in scale. As a rough guideline for applicants, we suggest that you keep proposed works within range of the following measurements

– two-dimensional and framed works, approx. 11” x 17”

– three-dimensional works, approx. 1 ft. sq.

3. The visual artists currently sitting on the VANL-CARFAC EVA Committee will serve as the selection committee to evaluate all proposals and select the artist for this commission.

Submissions:     

Submissions can be made electronically via email to vanlcarfac@gmail.com (with ‘Mary MacDonald Artwork submission’ in the subject line), or mailed or delivered by hand to 275 Duckworth St, Unit 1 St. John’s NL  A1C 1G9. All submissions must include the following materials:

• a written project description, no more than one (1) page in length, stating visual art medium, materials, approximate size and concept of the proposed final artworks.

• a sketch or some form of visual representation of the concept

• the artist’s CV

• up to 10 images, saved as JPEGs, on a PC-compatible CDR or sent via email, of past work (Original artwork will not be accepted.) This should be accompanied by a numbered image list with image title, size and medium, and the JPEG titles should include the artist name and image number (e. Smith_01).

Deadline for Proposals: March 8^th, 2019

Selection of Artist: March 15^th, 2019

Final Project Delivery Date: May 15th, 2019

Fee:                          

Artist fee of $750.00 (firm) to be paid for the completed artwork, payable once the artwork has been delivered. Any shipping costs are the responsibility of the artist.

Please note that VANL-CARFAC retains the right to photograph the artworks in the context of the EVA Awards Ceremony, for the purposes of display in own website, newsletter and other organization materials, including newspaper advertisements congratulating the winner of the award. The artist will be credited in all instances where the image may appear. We will not sell or licence images of the artworks for use by any other organization.

For Immediate Release   St. John’s, NL – December 10th, 2018  Cox & Palmer and Visual Artists Newfoundland and Labrador (VANL-CARFAC) are pleased to announce Lucas Morneau as the recipient of the 2018 Cox & Palmer Pivotal Point Grant.  Morneau, an inter-disciplinary artist based in Corner Brook, will receive the $5,000 grant to create a new exhibition of wearable art pieces and photographic works, blending the queer art of drag with the Newfoundland tradition of mummering.  

“We are delighted to congratulate Lucas Morneau on being the 2018 recipient of the Cox & Palmer Pivotal Point Grant,” says Paul McDonald, Partner at Cox & Palmer. “Lucas is a great example of the valuable contribution visual artists make to the dynamic culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. This grant will help grow his body of work, creatively bringing awareness to gender expression in our society. Cox & Palmer is proud to support the advancement of his career and the arts and culture of our province.”

The Cox & Palmer Pivotal Point Grant is a funding opportunity offered through VANL-CARFAC for visual artists in Newfoundland and Labrador. It was created to provide financial support for working visual artists who have reached a crucial point in their artistic career and to allow them to evolve their practice and develop their reputation and visibility within the art world. 

The jury for the 2018 Cox & Palmer Pivotal Point Grant Award were very pleased to recommend Morneau as this year’s recipient: “After careful consideration of the work of a strong pool of applicants, Morneau’s work was selected for this year’s Pivotal Point award.  The jury was impressed with the ways Morneau engages with the politics of place and everyday experience, and with the potential for this project to impact LGBTQ2+ communities, in both rural and urban parts of the province.”

Guidelines and Application

Cox & Palmer has partnered with VANL-CARFAC to offer a funding opportunity for visual artists in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Cox & Palmer Pivotal Point Grant is valued at $5000 and is awarded annually.

Aim of the Grant

The Cox & Palmer Pivotal Point Grant will provide financial support for a project and/or activities that will significantly advance an artist’s career, help evolve his, her or their practice and/or develop the artist’s reputation and visibility within the art world.  Examples include, but are not limited to: development of new audience/market through exhibitions; publications and presentations; skill set development for use of new media or materials crucial to the creation of a specific body of work; participation in a residency that provides time and facilities to generate new work; or support for creation of a body of work or for exhibition costs at a significant venue.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a current member of VANL-CARFAC.  Applicants can become a member at the time of application.

This grant is open to professional visual artists who are residents of Newfoundland and Labrador:

• Must be Canadian citizens or have permanent resident status
• Must be a current resident of Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of twelve consecutive months immediately prior to the time of application
• Must be at least eighteen years of age

Definition of professional artist

A creator of visual art has the status of professional visual artist if: earning a living through art making or possessing a diploma in an area considered to be within the domain of the fine arts, or teaching art in a school of art or applied art, or whose work is often seen by the public or is frequently or regularly exhibited, or recognized as an artist by consensus of opinion among professional artists.

Eligible Expenses

Eligible expenses include all reasonable expenses that will be incurred during the course of the proposed activity such as: travel, materials and supplies, technical support, residency costs, fabrication costs, shipping, studio rental, development and publication of promotional materials.  The proposed project can be for individual or collaborative projects (include documentation for each collaborator).  Other types of expenses will be considered as long as clearly justified by the nature of the proposed plan.

• Completed application form and detailed budget
• Detailed project description that clearly outlines the program or nature of activities, how this will be carried out within the stated timeline and how this will be beneficial to the advancement of your career and/or artistic practice
• Up to date curriculum vitae
• Head shot/Artist photo
• Artist statement that provides context for previous work
  • Digital documentation of previously created artwork’s maximum of 20 images, DVDs, audio/video documentation (Original artwork will not be accepted)

• Optional Support Materials:

• Letters of support
• Confirmation of residency or exhibition
• Recent reviews, catalogues, etc.

Assessment Criteria will be based on the following three components:

• Artistic merit of work produced
• Strength and feasibility of proposed activity
• Ability to enhance the artist’s career/artistic practice.

Adjudication Process

All applications will be reviewed by the VANL-CARFAC staff for eligibility and completeness. All applications that meet these criteria will then be assessed by a committee of artists and arts professionals chosen by VANL-CARFAC’s board of directors.

Final Report

A comprehensive final report is required that includes an outline of the project/activities, a budget and the benefit to the artist.   This report is due within one month of completion of the project.
